Sean Maher
Chief Economist, Phillips 66
Sean Maher is the Chief Economist for Phillips 66. Prior to joining Phillips 66, Maher was co-founder of Third Gear Investments, an investment firm that invests across the entire energy value chain, from traditional energy to utilities, leveraging deep expertise and understanding of the market dynamics and opportunities.
Before Third Gear Investments, Maher was a partner and senior portfolio manager at RCH Energy, a premier energy boutique where he oversaw -$700 million in public equity assets. He also served as a board member and co-chair of the Audit Committee for a publicly listed oil and gas company.
Maher started his energy finance career in Morgan Stanley's Energy Investment Banking practice before joining the No. 1 ranked energy team, covering integrated oils and refining. He was then selected to lead the burgeoning Midstream and Integrated Natural Gas franchises.
Maher earned a Bachelor of Business in finance and economics and a Master of Business Administration in accounting and finance from St. Bonaventure University. Maher is an ICF-accredited ACC, trained at the Doerr School at Rice University in the Executive Leadership Coaching Program. He holds an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) credential from the International Coaching Federation and an NACD Directorship Certification® from the National Association of Corporate Directors.
Maher serves as a trustee and chair of the Investment Committee for the Houston Museum of Natural Science. He is a board member for Covenant House Texas, where he has chaired the Sleep Out: Executive Edition in 2021, 2022 and 2023, raising more than $1 million annually for homeless youth.
