Mike Tims
Vice-Chairman, Matco Investments Ltd.
Michael Tims is the Vice Chairman of MATCO Investments Ltd., a private investment holding company with interests in oil and gas, oilfield services, real estate, investment management and merchant banking. In December of 2013, Mr. Tims retired from Peters & Co. Limited, a Canadian investment firm specializing in oil and gas, oilfield services and energy infrastructure. He held a number of senior executive positions over a 33-year career at Peters & Co., latterly serving as Chairman, and before that as President & CEO.
Mr. Tims holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (with distinction) from the University of Calgary, a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard University, and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Calgary. He is a Chartered Business Valuator.
Mr. Tims is the current Chairman of the National Gallery of Canada and is the Vice Chair of the Gallery’s Foundation. He has previously served as the Chairman of: the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (the insurance fund for the Canadian investment industry); the Investment Dealers Association of Canada; the United Way of Calgary and Area; and West Island College (Alberta). He has served as a director or trustee, and remains active with, a number of other not-for-profit organizations. He was also a member of the Wise Persons’ Committee, which studied securities regulation in Canada.
Among a number of awards for business achievement and community service, Mr. Tims was the first recipient of the Management Alumni Excellence (“MAX”) Award from the University of Calgary and was the 2007 recipient of the Distinguished Business Leader Award, presented by the Haskayne School of Business and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. In 2008, he was named “Citizen of the Year” by the City of Calgary in recognition of his long-standing involvement with community, educational and charitable organizations. In 2013, Mr. Tims was inducted into the Investment Industry Hall of Fame by the Investment Industry Association of Canada.
