Tobias Tonsing

Asset Manager for South Africa, Africa Energy

Tobias Tonsing was born in South Africa and completed an honours degree in Exploration Geophysics at the University of Pretoria in 1999.

He started his career in the Upstream Industry at South Africa’s NOC Soekor / PetroSA in Cape Town in 2000, where he joined the New Ventures Team for Africa. At that stage the Oribi Oil Field was generating a steady income for PetroSA and there was a strong drive to expand into Africa. This resulted in several farm-ins to Gabon and Equatorial Guinea and Tobias was subsequently appointed Gabon Exploration Manager at PetroSA. During this time, he also completed an MSc at the University of Cape Town on Rock Physics Calibration in the Bredasdorp Basin.

In 2006 he joined Energy Africa, which was subsequently taken over by Tullow Oil.  He continued his role as Exploration Manager for Gabon and later joined Tullow’s Commercial Team managing conceptual development projects and economic evaluations across Africa.

In 2016 he joined Africa Energy, a small exploration start-up in Cape Town, where he currently leads New Ventures Projects and several Exploration Assets in Southern Africa
