Energy Council > Meet The Speakers > Meet The Speaker > Floris Iking, Managing Director, Alvarez & Marsal Mexico

How did you come to be in the energy industry?
As a turnaround and restructuring professional, first with Oceanografia in March 2014 and then with the fall in oil prices that happened thereafter, it was somewhat circumstance that I became involved in the industry

What is your proudest work-related achievement to date?
I am one of the founding members of Alvarez & Marsal’s Mexico City office which opened in January 2011.  Being a part of the growth of this business from 4 professionals in 2011 to over 25 today has been really exciting and rewarding.

Where do you see the greatest opportunity in the energy market?
In Mexico, I see opportunities in on-shore O&G infrastructure (pipelines, terminals) and also in alternative forms of energy (solar, wind).

Where do you see the greatest challenges?
In Mexico, the biggest challenge is the pricing of risk for new projects.  There are many important projects that do not get off the ground or are delayed because of lack of availability of funds, which implies a mismatch between the potential return of the project and the required return for the investor

Who had inspired you to join or develop within the industry?
My clients!

What was the wisest advice you received from a mentor?
Be yourself

What advice would you pass onto a recent graduate wishing to work in your line of business?
In the consulting that I do, my advice would be to think about how you would like to differentiate yourself from the competition and take action (over the medium term) to do so

If you could wave a magic wand over the global industry, what would you change and why?
Solve PEMEXs balance sheet and cash flow issues – if PEMEX could be “unlocked” and gradually migrate to a more profitable enterprise, the knock-on effects to the economy in Mexico would be incredible… where is that magic wand?

What’s the one interesting fact about you that no one would suspect?
I have skied at the sites of six Winter Olympics… South Korea, Vancouver, Calgary, Salt Lake City, Lake Tahoe and Innsbruck, Austria

How do you prefer to spend your spare time?
With my family

What is your hobby or an achievement outside of career?
Playing tennis

What’s your favourite holiday destination?
Mayakoba Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico

All-time favourite book?
One Hundred Years of Solitude

All-time favourite film?
Papillon

What three items would you take with you to a desert island?
Sunscreen, Water filter, appropriate footwear
