Diversifying Energy Supplies & Strengthening Regional Cooperation
Published 04 December 2024
Central and Southeastern Europe (CESEE) are pivotal in reshaping the European Union's energy strategy, serving as essential transit corridors and emerging hubs for diversified gas supplies. Historically reliant on Russian gas, these regions are actively pursuing energy diversification and regional cooperation to enhance energy security and stability.
Leveraging the Black Sea's Potential
The Black Sea region holds significant untapped energy resources, particularly in natural gas. Countries like Romania and Bulgaria are exploring offshore reserves to reduce dependence on external suppliers and strengthen energy autonomy. However, geopolitical complexities and the need for substantial investments present challenges to fully harnessing this potential.
Expanding LNG Imports through Greece and Croatia
Greece and Croatia have become critical entry points for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) into Europe. Greece's Alexandroupolis terminal, operational since October 2024, diversifies gas routes to Europe, supplying gas to countries including Bulgaria, Romania, and Serbia. Similarly, Croatia's KRK LNG Terminal enhances energy security and promotes regional cooperation among neighbouring countries.
Key Infrastructure Projects: TAP and IGB
The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) are instrumental in diversifying energy supplies. TAP transports natural gas from Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field to European markets, while IGB, operational since October 2022, facilitates gas flow between Greece and Bulgaria, reducing reliance on Russian gas.
Strengthening Regional Cooperation
Initiatives like the Central and South-Eastern Europe Energy Connectivity (CESEC) aim to build an interconnected regional electricity market and boost renewables and energy efficiency. Collaborative efforts among CESEE countries are vital for energy diversification and security, fostering economic development and stability.
Challenges and Opportunities
Engage with these critical topics at EGC 2025, Europe's premier gas conference. The event convenes senior energy leaders to discuss energy security, infrastructure, and decarbonisation under Chatham House Rules, ensuring confidential and impactful dialogues.

Is Gas the Answer to a Pragmatic, Smart and Secure Energy Transition?
Using gas as a bridge to transition is not a new concept but if the goal is to lower emissions whilst still providing affordable and reliable energy for all, one could argue that natural gas could, and should, be the bridge that can enable transition – cutting emissions in the short to medium term and solving the intermittency issue of renewables until the clean energy markets are more established. read more
The Energy Council News Round-Up: A selection of Russia-Ukraine energy analyses
