Turning Regulations into Revenue: Capitalizing on Emissions Reduction

According to the IEA, the production, transport, and processing of oil and gas in 2022 resulted in emissions of 5.1 billion tonnes (Gt) of CO2-equivalent (CO2-eq), representing just under 15% of total energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally. These emissions, known as “scope 1 and 2,” stem directly from oil and gas activities. Moreover, the consumption of these fuels contributes an additional 40% to global emissions. Amidst growing environmental concerns, regulatory pressures are intensifying. Legislative measures such as the Inflation Reduction Act and waste emissions charges are compelling the industry to mitigate its environmental impact more aggressively.
This regulatory landscape not only increases the urgency for emissions reduction but also opens up significant opportunities for the industry to capitalize on. By adopting innovative emissions management strategies and technologies, the oil and gas sector can not only comply with stringent regulations but also enhance operational efficiencies and potentially unlock new revenue streams through carbon credit markets and more sustainable product offerings.
Phases of Emissions Reduction
Emissions reduction within the oil and gas industry can be broadly categorized into three progressive phases, each reflecting an advancement in methods and compliance with emerging regulations:
1. Voluntary Phase: In this initial phase, companies proactively seek to reduce their emissions footprint through various means, including the detection and repair of methane leaks. This phase focuses on taking pre-emptive actions before regulatory mandates enforce such measures.
2. WEC Fee Phase: As regulations tighten and the waste emissions charge is implemented, oil and gas companies must integrate stringent compliance strategies to avoid financial penalties for exceeding emissions thresholds, thus minimizing potential financial risks.
3. Quad O Phase: The final phase involves adopting cutting-edge technologies and methodologies to achieve deeper emissions cuts. This phase demands significant investment and innovation to meet stringent environmental standards and pave the way for a low-carbon future.
Technologies for Emissions Reduction
The industry has seen the development of several technologies crucial for effective emissions management:
High-Sensitivity Methane Detection: Technologies such as infrared cameras and advanced sensors play a vital role in identifying methane leaks, even at low concentrations. These tools are essential for early detection and prevention of significant emissions.
Drone and Satellite Monitoring: Drones equipped with sensors provide real-time surveillance of oil fields, while satellites offer wide-area coverage, enabling the monitoring of emissions across extensive oil and gas operations.

Methane Measurement Techniques
Accurate methane measurement is critical for effective emissions management. The industry employs various techniques, including:
Direct Measurement: Using devices that measure methane levels directly at the source or within the facility to provide accurate, real-time data.
Indirect Estimation: This approach uses statistical models and operational data to estimate emissions based on known parameters and historical trends.
Atmospheric Sampling: This method involves measuring methane concentrations in the atmosphere around oil and gas operations, often using aircraft or drones to collect data over a broad area.

The North American oil and gas market maintained their position as ‘most active region’, in terms of both the quantity of deals and the total transaction values – leading to a total of 21 deals to the value of $12.72bn being confirmed in Q1/2021. Since the close of Q1, a further 21 deals to the value of $21.1bn have been processed in the North American market, indicating that the shale patch is beginning to undergo another round of consolidation.
