Iran Conflict: Considerations for Energy Investors

Written by Catherine Brown, Project Director, Energy Council New York

I am an image

March 2026 – Amid escalating tensions in the Gulf, energy markets have again moved to the centre of investor attention. Across the energy value chain, the matter is not just the immediate price response, but how a prolonged period of disruption could affect global energy security, commodity markets, and capital allocation.

With visibility limited, investors are increasingly assessing scenario-based outcomes – weighing duration, market impact, and potential investment opportunities across asset classes.

Oil Volatility

Market direction in the near term will hinge on developments around the Strait of Hormuz  through which approximately 20 million barrels per day, or around one-fifth of global oil supply, transit, alongside significant volumes of liquefied natural gas (LNG), petrochemicals, fertilizers, and metals.

Even partial disruption to these flows can materially tighten global balances. Polymarket puts the probability that the Strait of Hormuz is still closed on March 31st at 85%.1

Shipping risk premiums have also risen, and insurers have re-evaluated coverage terms in the region, further embedding geopolitical uncertainty into transport costs.2

Natural gas markets have similarly reacted, particularly in Europe and Asia, where inventories remain sensitive and LNG supply reliability is central to winter security planning.

Energy-importing regions remain most exposed to price shocks, particularly at a time when seasonal demand dynamics and inventory levels can amplify volatility. The United States, as a major producer and net exporter of both oil and LNG, remains comparatively insulated from direct supply shock exposure.

Energy in Portfolios

Energy now represents a small share of major equity indices  approximately 3% of the S&P 500, down from ~10% a decade ago and over 20% in earlier cycles. By contrast, technology now accounts for more than 50% of the index.1

This shift has reduced energy’s role as a natural portfolio hedge at a time when commodity price shocks are again driving market volatility.

Research from Jefferies suggests many institutional portfolios remain underweight oil and gas equities relative to both historical levels and current macro risk.

If volatility persists, this underexposure is likely to drive a reassessment of allocations. Flows are likely to favour upstream producers, which offer direct leverage to commodity prices, while more capital-intensive segments such as oilfield services may lag without sustained spending visibility.

Private capital watching Gulf exposure

Private capital investors are monitoring exposure across portfolios, particularly assets linked to Gulf trade flows and cross-border energy infrastructure.

Capital deployment into Gulf markets has accelerated. Global Private Capital Association data shows deal value reached $20.3 billion in 2025, up from $6.8 billion the previous year.

At the Energy Council’s Advisory Board meeting in London last week, participants noted that prolonged instability could increase the relative attractiveness of U.S. onshore markets, given their resource depth and domestic supply security. Energy security was consistently cited as a top priority for both investors and corporate clients.

More broadly, the escalation reinforces a structural shift already underway across global energy markets – geopolitical risk increasingly embedded in investment strategy.

Continuing the discussion

The themes highlighted in this briefing, including geopolitical risk, energy security, commodity market volatility and shifting capital allocation strategies, will be explored in greater depth at Energy Council New York 2026.

The agenda brings together investor perspectives and industry insight on how capital is being deployed across U.S. energy markets, from oil and LNG to power, infrastructure and emerging technologies.

Download the agenda →

Looking ahead

These themes will feature prominently at Energy Council New York 2026 (16–17 June, Nasdaq), where investors and industry leaders will assess how evolving geopolitical dynamics are reshaping strategy, portfolio positioning, and long-term capital allocation.
